TweetDeck v0.15.1b Details

Version 0.15.1 of TweetDeck is complete. This is a point release which contains no new features instead it introduces fixes for a number of UI/Window related bugs and a more efficient method of gathering data from Summize. The details are below.

Clicking on the "+" button whilst maximised will now restore the TweetDeck back to its original size and position.

In the top right corner of the window you will now see two new buttons. One has a "1" on it and clicking on this will switch TweetDeck to a one column view. Clicking on the "1" button again with restore TweetDeck to its original width.  The other new button has an "r" on it and this is the window reset button. Clicking on this will reset TweetDeck to the initial size and position it when when first installed. You can use this button to get out of any window related difficulties. This button is rather ugly in this position so I will be moving it to the settings panel (yes there is a full setting panel on the way) and this command will also be available from the task bar/dock.

Direct Messages now have their own column and will no longer show up in the Replies column. There is a DIRECT button in the button bar at the top which when clicked adds the Direct Messages column. This column has been added to the default set of columns for new users.

The maximum timeframe has been reduced from 168 to 48 hours. With the introduction of Global Search columns (powered by Summize) a user could potentially have 9 columns each containing thousands of tweets - TweetDeck can easily cope with this volume whilst running but there could be an impact on the application load time when started. This is a "preemptive strike" whilst I investigate how to make the application initialisation more palletable.

When the TweetDeck window goes below a certain width there is now a new single column version of the Tweet panel. The TWEET button is now also present making it easier to use TweetDeck in a minimal one column mode.

On Saturday there was a brief period when multiple copies of queued tweets (either from offline or twitter problem modes) were sent out. I investigated the issue at length with Cali Lewis (@calilewis) since she could recreate the issue quite easily. I could find no definite cause for this but suspect it may have something to do with the HTTP response code that is sent back from the twitter API, especially since it does not appear to have happened since. Whatever the cause this is unacceptable so I have decided to pull offline tweeting from TweetDeck until a more robust solution can be found. I do not anticipate this being very long.

Finally the API calls used to get data from Summize have been made more efficient, at their suggestion, so as to reduce unnecessary load on the Summize infrastructure and to make the updates more efficient within TweetDeck.

TweetDeck v0.15.2 now in development.

Love the single column, clicking on a space in the scrollbar skips to next column very nicely. Feels like a 'new feature' to me.

I like the single column view, and ease of switching between them. What I miss in single column view is the Twitter status. Maybe it could be added in the "All Tweets" header area, at least in single column view.

Keep up the good work.

If you could use a pre-release tester on a Mac, just let me know. :)

Today I spent my working day with a maximized TweekDeck maximized on my #2 monitor.
I love the look&feel, I get a clear visibility of incoming tweets, from tweets from my Group.

All this is an excellent work.

Thank you!

My only wish for TweetDeck is some way of distinguishing between read/not read tweets.

Hi Iain,
I just left this comment over at John Cass' blog so wanted to share it with you too.

Thanks for creating TweetDeck - it's a great app and I will keep using it and eagerly await the upgrades. When I am on the PC I still mainly tend to use http://twitter.com/ and on my Windows Mobile device (a Palm Treo 750) I use both http://m.twitter.com/ and http://m.slandr.net (Slandr is good for checking your "Replies Tab" from the mobile device - m.twitter doesn't allow this)

The Groups on TweetDeck is a great idea. I'd like to see more control over this feature. For example, Twitter has everyone's "Location" should they care to specify it. Thus I'd like to see TweetDeck scan the people you Follow and automatically group them by location.

Having checkboxes and an alpha sort of followers is a great start, but anyone with 100+ people they follow will find this cumbersome to work with for Group creation and maintenance. I'm thinking a nice drag-and-drop interface would be special - I am sure these are not new ideas to you though.

Cheers

I'm not getting Replies to show up at all. Anyone else having that issue?

Never mind. Since the update shortened the time frame to 48 hours, I didn't have any replies.

Keep up the good work!

Thanks, glad everything is ok.

OK. I do notice that a reply only shows up in the Replies column if the @user is at the beginning of the tweet. Can it look for the @user if it's in the middle?

Very nice client - looking forward to continued updates. One potential issue - direct tweets do not appear to be working for me. Not sure why and I don't have a lot of followers to test with.

I love TweetDeck. Give me some spellcheck and I'll be peachy.

One issue... TweetDeck does not seem to remember window size or position after I quit and restart the app.

When I have tried v0.15.1b the first time everything worked fine, but since testing the new switch buttons, the 'Group', 'Search', 'Replies' and 'Direct' features are disabled...any idea what has happened?

Those buttons are disabled when you have used all 10 columns, deleting a column will enable the buttons again.

Great, works! Thanks for the quick answer. Best regards from Germany.

Initially I ignored tweetdeck as the window UI was wrong - why would you make a Windows app with ui that doesn't work?

Then when I came back to it, I noticed it had collected group tweets silently, and I liked that - so I looked at this last point release.

You must be able to resize a window. As in, grab the edges and change its shape. The screen is my real estate. Tweetdeck can decide how it displays when sized, but you cannot just take up random fixed sizes.

Single column, multi column, very nice - but irrelevant until you allow resizing. Otherwise, there is something good here.

After further messing about I can see that it will change when fiddled with, what is mssing is pointer feedback. Also some guidelines on the edges would help.

The minimum size is too big - it should compress to one visible tweet. Also on one column mode, changing size should morph the tweet rows to change the text field.

Again, these are not personal, they are windows guidelines. Don't break them unless you are creating a better expereience.

You can resize the window. Just grab far left, far right, top or bottom areas or bottom right corner to resize.
