TweetDeck v0.16.1b Details
Well I wasn't planning a v0.16.1 but a few things came together at the last moment and the level of new functionality warranted a new point release. So here it is.
First off the most obvious new feature is the introduction of system chrome in place of the nice Adobe AIR chromeless window. This is obviously not a style choice but letting the OS handle the window functions (resize, maximise, minimize etc) makes the window more stable, seems to solve a lot of window issues people are having especially on Vista and having transparency turned off has significantly reduced RAM usage.
We've integrated TwitScoop into TweetDeck so it can have its own column and this ability to see what's "trending" on Twitter at any given moment really came into its own yesterday when the word Earthquake grew very large in the cloud. Clicking on it took me to the twitscoop.com page for earthquake and I learnt what had happened. Then I added a Global Search column for earthquake and followed the story as it progressed. This is fantastic new functionality for TweetDeck (made possible by the TwitScoop people, thanks!) being notified by what's growing in the "cloud" and then following it via Global Search and it's this leveraging of various Twitter services that TweetDeck is ALL about. Expect to see further relevant integration very soon.
After many requests we've integrated TwitPic into the Tweet box and enabled TweetDeck on Windows to minimise to the system tray, the power of http://tweetdeck.uservoice.com is really coming into effect now so please vote for or submit you ideas for TweetDeck improvements.
Also implemented in this version is the Adobe AIR Update framework (http://labs.adobe.com/wiki/index.php/Adobe_AIR_Update_Framework) which allows for a more seemless method of updating TweetDeck.
Another key new feature is how replies are searched for via Twitter Search (formerly Summize). In the last version we added the ability to enter multiple @usernames in a tweet so you could direct a tweet to multiple recipients. We've now changed the Twitter Search for replies so that it looks for @username ANYWHERE in the tweet (rather than previously when it just looked for @username at the beginning). Twitter doesn't actually support this functionality via its main API BUT since TweetDeck uses both Twitter and TwitterSearch APIs to populate the Replies WE DO!
Other new features/fixes in this version include:
- Added remembering of last used URL shortening service
- Added clicking on notification window restores TD window
- Added eweri.com URL shortening service
- Moved window size/position info to preferences file
- Fixed shorten URL cleared when successful
- Fixed tweet text not cleared if profile panel displayed
Next version is v0.17 and is still going to introduce new colour themes and support for extended character sets.
Enjoy.
A request for a future release: the option to popup preview the incoming tweets in the notification window.
